Ocean’s Child by Christine Ford and Trish Holland and Illustrated by David Diaz
In celebration of National Children’s Book Week, we’ve chosen one of our favorites to share, Ocean’s Child by Christine Ford and Trish Holland and illustrated by David Diaz. The story is perfect for bedtime and the rhythmic repetition of the phrase “good night” is soothing for the little ones. The book opens with an Inuit mother paddling her little baby home at sundown as they stop and say goodnight to the various sea life along the way. At the end mommy explains “And you are a child of Ocean as well/forever a part of me/To Ocean’s child I say good night/Good night, my child, good night.” The message is beautiful and helps children understand the importance of nature and that they are connected to the environment. The pictures are vivid and capture the attention of babies and toddlers while the story is intriguing to pre-schoolers and young grade school kids. Ocean’s Child is a sweet story with stunning illustrations and a positive message.
