Hohner 4 Piece Baby Band

Posted in nurture on July 26th, 2010 by admin – Comments Off

hohner_baby_bandWe enrolled our little one in Kindermusik when he was just a few months old and it has been so much fun to watch him recognize the songs we sing and hear him laugh when we do the dance moves together. He adores music like a lot of babies and his favorite part of music class and playtime at home is with the instruments. The Hohner 4 Piece Baby Band is perfect for infants who are learning to shake, rattle, and roll. The set comes with a rainbow shaker, a baby maraca, a rattle, and a cage bell. All four allow baby to get a good grip and they’re safe for mouthing which we know they’re guaranteed to do. These perfectly sized instruments with a clear tome come in a vinyl carrying case so you and baby can jam on the road. If you have an older kiddo, check out the Hohner 5 Piece Toddler Band which comes with various noisemakers, xylephone, and a drum. Get your little one’s music career started early with the Baby Band and they may be thanking you at the Grammys someday.

Cooking Light “First Foods”

Posted in nurture on July 12th, 2010 by admin – Comments Off

cooking_light_first_foodsCooking Light is one of my favorite magazines and it taught me how to create healthy meals with easy to make recipes. Almost everything I cook for my family and dinner parties comes from Cooking Light and now I’m super excited about their new book “First Foods” being released in August. A registered dietician has developed recipes like Lentils with Sweet Potatoes, Avocado Yogurt Dip, and Cheese Broccoli and Potatoes which have all been tested in the Cooking Light Test Kitchen and approved by a panel of babies and toddlers. “First Foods” also teaches the reader on how to help your children move along the stages of eating solids and tips on how to create positive eating habits. You can pre-order this cookbook and healthy eating manual for babies and toddlers right now and the spiral bound book will be shipped on the release date of August 17th.

Reading Rainbow DVD Set

reading_rainbow_dvd“Butterfly in the sky, I can fly twice as high. Take a look. It’s in a book. Reading Rainbow.” Ahhh, love the theme song to one of the most wonderful television shows. Reading Rainbow on PBS brought books to life and made children all over want to run to the library and gobble up the stories told on each episode. Besides the cool narrations and side stories, the host Levar Burton was the guy you wished was your school teacher. Even though Reading Rainbow is no longer on the air, you can still enjoy Levar and friends on the Reading Rainbow DVD sets and share your happy childhood tv memories with your kiddos. The Reading Rainbow Favorites DVD set includes 4 discs with eight episodes and 120 minutes of bonus material. “I can go anywhere. Friends to know and ways to grow. Reading Rainbow.”

California Baby SPF 30 Sunscreen

Posted in live, nurture on May 26th, 2010 by admin – 1 Comment

california_baby_sunscreenThe Environmental Working Group released the 2010 list of best sunscreens and only 39 of 500 sunscreens were recommended. We were excited to see the sunscreen we use on ourselves and our baby was one of the chosen. California Baby SPF 30 Sunscreen is the only thing we’ve ever used on our little one and it’s absolutely fantastic. The pediatrician advised us to only use sunscreens with titanium dioxide which reflects the UV rays and California Baby contains this key ingredient. It’s also water resistant and doesn’t have any harmful chemicals. The sunscreen goes on easy and rubs in pretty well despite its thickness and reapplication isn’t needed until 80 minutes after the first time it’s put on, even when you’ve been in water. We love how it’s non-staining since we slather it on the baby then put him back into his stroller and ruining the fabric would not be fun! The sunscreen also contains the anti-oxidant Japanese Green Tea and it has a pleasant scent which is basically light and almost non-existent. We use the lotion but there is also a California Baby SPF 30 Sunscreen Stick which is easy to apply when in a hurry. We prefer the lotion since all three of use it and we can apply it on all of us at the same time. The sunscreen is a bit pricey but we’ve all been using one tube for almost three months and there is still a lot left to take us well into the summer. We love California Baby products and their sunscreen and this isn’t just for the wee ones but big people too.

Ocean’s Child by Christine Ford and Trish Holland and Illustrated by David Diaz

oceans_childIn celebration of National Children’s Book Week, we’ve chosen one of our favorites to share, Ocean’s Child by Christine Ford and Trish Holland and illustrated by David Diaz. The story is perfect for bedtime and the rhythmic repetition of the phrase “good night” is soothing for the little ones. The book opens with an Inuit mother paddling her little baby home at sundown as they stop and say goodnight to the various sea life along the way. At the end mommy explains “And you are a child of Ocean as well/forever a part of me/To Ocean’s child I say good night/Good night, my child, good night.” The message is beautiful and helps children understand the importance of nature and that they are connected to the environment. The pictures are vivid and capture the attention of babies and toddlers while the story is intriguing to pre-schoolers and young grade school kids. Ocean’s Child is a sweet story with stunning illustrations and a positive message.

up & up Diapers

Posted in nurture on April 30th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to comment

up_and_up_diapersOkay, I’m a diaper snob when it comes to our disposables. Pampers Swaddlers could do no wrong in my eyes but of course they’re also the most expensive ones out there. We made the switch to cloth diapers but the reality is that with our lifestyle and routine we need to be a hybrid household, as in we use both cloth and disposable. Since we were running low on disposables but didn’t need the large box of Pampers from Diapers.com anymore, on a whim I bought the up & up Diapers from Target which is their generic brand. I am in absolute shock that after using them for a week, they are fantastic diapers. No leaks, no blowouts, no rashes, nothing. Even when my son sleeps for 11 hours, the diapers hold it all and they run true to size. The up & up Diapers are definitely comparable to Pampers and we actually think they are better for two reasons. According to my husband they are better than Pampers because they don’t have the powdery scent that can be nauseating. In fact, they contain the poopy smell even better than our old diapers. The second reason they’re better is because they’re cheaper. Here’s the cost savings. For a Jumbo Pack of Size 2, I got 42 diapers for $6.49 which comes to 15.5 cents a diaper. A Jumbo Pack of Pampers Swaddlers in size 2 is about 29 cents a diaper so a 13.5 cent savings per diaper. With around 150 changes of disposables a month it amounts to be $20.25….that’s $20.25 I can use towards a treat for mommy! We highly recommend up & up Diapers, straight from the mouth of a disposable diaper snob.

Sleeved Bib by Bumkins

Posted in nurture on April 21st, 2010 by admin – Be the first to comment

sleeved_bib_bumkinsYou know those times when you’ve got Baby all dressed up in his cutest duds and you’re dreading mealtime when the outfit will be history? Fear no more. The Sleeved Bib by Bumkins will save you from a change of clothes since it will cover all of your little one. It has a tie closure and elastic at the wrists to keep the food from seeping under the sleeves. Bumkins are the best bibs and we were given our first one as a baby gift and they are a cut above the rest. The fabric is waterproof and stain resistant and I love how they fold up into tiny squares and take up barely any room in the diaper bag. They have the catch-all pockets to save the highchair from the mess. But most importantly, they’re machine washable. If you don’t need the Sleeved Bib, check out the regular SuperBib which is sold by itself or in a pack of 3.
